For her Foundation Grant, Ravinia teacher Sharon Steckel brought in poet Arlyn Miller to work with fourth grade students. Students drew zinnias they had planted as 3rd graders and, through funding from the Ravinia PTO, traveled to the Chicago Botanic Gardens to draw and take a class in their Flower Lab. The students used the knowledge, experience and vocabulary gained in these experiences to work one on one with Miller to compose a poem inspired by nature. The project culminated in a cross-curricular partnership with the music program where the art was explained and on display during the concert.
