About iRead and Author Visits
For over 20 years, the Foundation has sponsored a fundraiser that fosters our preschool and elementary school students’ love of reading.
As students read and record their minutes, they raise money from sponsors. The funds raised from the iRead program help support the Foundation’s Author Visit program. The readers and fundraisers from every school are recognized with prizes and the school with the most minutes read per student is awarded the highly coveted iRead trophy. iRead is typically held in January following the winter break.
Professional Author Visits
The 112 Education Foundation proudly funds professional author visits in all North Shore School District 112 schools. Proceeds raised through the iREAD read-a-thon fund these special opportunities. Students interact with authors, learning about the research and writing process. In some instances, middle school students participate in writing workshops with the authors. Recent authors visiting D112 schools include Kate Messner, Tracey Baptiste, Aaron Reynolds, Jacob Grant, Matthew Cordell, and Nathan Hale.

We have a repeat champion! Congratulations once again to the Ravinia Raccoons! Students at Ravinia read an average of 1485 minutes per student during the event. The Raccoons smashed the iRead record they set in 2019 of 1156 minutes per student. As is a tradition for the iRead event, the school principal and the school librarian planned a top-secret trophy reveal presentation to announce the victory to the staff and students. This year the K-5 students in D112 read for a combined 1,688,726 minutes between January 11 and February 3. That’s 636 minutes per student! This year’s read-a-thon also raised over $22,000 to support the 112 Education Foundation’s Author Visit program.

And the 2019 iRead winner is…RAVINIA! Congratulations to the Raccoons, and their librarian, Eric Lau, on a tremendous iRead. Ravinia children read an average of over 1100 minutes per student during the course of the event to beat out four-time winner Sherwood, and claim the top spot in the District. Ravinia principal, Courtney Nordstrom, and Ravinia librarian, Erin Lau, surprised students and staff at an all-school assembly with the exciting news on March 15. The 112 Education Foundation’s iRead program encourages reading across District 112. Over the four week program, elementary students read almost 1,480,000 minutes. Through sponsorships from students’ family and friends, the 2019 iRead program raised over $25,000. The funds raised will primarily support the Foundation’s Author Visit program, which brings professional authors to every D112 school for enrichment programming.

Congratulations to the Sherwood Elementary School Pandas who won their unprecedented FOURTH iRead competition. The readers at Sherwood worked hard, logging over 1000 minutes per student, with more than 90% of the school participating. For the second year in a row, Sherwood set an iRead record for the highest average minutes per student. Sherwood principal, Nicole Bellini, and IMC Director, Helen Weiss, served as marshals during a school-wide victory parade through the halls.
Students in every elementary school, as well as Green Bay Preschool, participated in this year’s read-a-thon. iRead began with a fabulous Kick-Off event at the Highland Park Library on January 6, with over 1000 students and their families attending. Collectively, students in NSSD112 read over 1,603,302 minutes between January 6 through January 31.
